questions and help with relief measures for common discomforts.
After Dance is a unique class for mom and baby.
You will
have positive time with baby
increase cardiovascular endurance
improve range of motion
realign your body
increase strength and flexibility
learn tips for relaxation and nurturing
find support from other moms.
In the immediate postpartum period, moms get careful attention to realigning and
strengthening muscles that have been stretched by pregnancy and birth. As
strength and endurance improve, the hazards of parenthood (like lack of sleep
and extra lifting) are less troublesome. When your baby is older, you will be
encouraged to work hard enough to be really fit, healthy and relaxed enough to
cope with parenting issues.
Babies always take precedence, but whether needing to be held, ready to play or
blissfully asleep, we have activities to keep you moving and baby content.
Fall ‘07 classes offered Tuesdays and Thursdays beginning in September at
Artisan’s Courtyard, 1577 Westwood Way. Call 590-3449 or email

Mother Dance For many years an almost mythological association has been made
between the roots of oriental dance and the sacred rites of motherhood and
birth. Let us be perfectly clear. In it’s region of origin, Raqs Sharqi is
danced by both men and women and incorporates a number of movements not suited
to the pregnant and postpartum body. Mother dance is a unique blend of those
elements of Raqs Sharqi which are helpful and centering during pregnancy and
recovery, and exercises which have been proven to be safe and effective for
women in this very special time of life. While not all oriental movements
translate well to the pregnant body, there is no denying that the fluid
movements are conducive to pain relief in pregnancy, the strong focus on core
muscles in the back, abdomen and pelvic floor strengthen the compromised
pregnant body and several movements which are part of this beautiful dance are
spontaneously engaged during various parts of labor and delivery. This class has
been specifically developed to explore where the strength and solace of Raqs
Sharqi and the needs of the pregnant body intersect, however it is intended as a
supplement to Dancing Thru Pregnancy rather than a substitute. We make no claims
as to the efficacy of Mother Dance in improving pregnancy and birth outcomes, and
highly recommend Dancing Thru Pregnancy as a starting point to all exercise
engaged in during pregnancy. Mother Dance is offered as demand warrants.
